6th Sunday of Easter

1st: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48
Ps: 97:1-4,
2nd: 1 John 4:7-10
The Gospel of John 15:9-17

Jesus said to his disciples:
‘As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my own joy may be in you and your joy be complete. This is my commandment: love one another, as I have loved you. A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do what I command you. I shall not call you servants any more, because a servant does not know his master’s business; I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have learnt from my Father. You did not choose me, no, I chose you; and I commissioned you to go out and to bear fruit, fruit that will last; and then the Father will give you anything you ask him in my name. What I command you is to love one another.’

As I have loved you

Where love is, what can be wanting? Where love is not, what can profit? But this love is distinguished from men’s love for each other as men, by adding, “As I have loved you.” To what end did Christ love us, but that we should reign with Him? Let us therefore so love one another, as that our love be different from that of other men who do not love one another to the end that God may be loved, because they do not really love at all. They who love one another for the sake of having God within them, they truly love one another.
St. Augustine (Catena Aurea)

Our Lord’s Ascension

The Ascension of Christ can be seen as a twofold cause of our salvation:

1. What it does in us: In ascending to the Father, He uplifts our souls increasing faith, hope, charity, and reverence for Him since we no longer see him as an earthly man, but as the God of heaven.
2. What it does for us: Our Lord prepared a way for us, according to the words of Micheas (2:13), “With a leader to break the path they shall burst open the gate and go out through it; Their king shall go through before them, and the Lord at their head.” He is our Head and the members must follow where the Head has gone.

A Teenage Saint and Martyr

St Pancras is thought to have been of Roman citizenship. His mother died during childbirth and his father died when he was eight, so he went to live with an uncle. Shortly after, they both converted to Christianity and during the persecution by Diocletian, (ca. 303) Pancras was captured and brought before the authorities who ordered him to perform a sacrifice to the Roman gods and promising him money and power, but as Pancras remained strong in the faith, he was put to death by beheading. Pancras was only fourteen years old. St. Augustine of Canterbury brought the devotion to England, where a Church was dedicated to the young martyr.
