Corpus Christi Sunday

1st: Exodus 24:3-8.
Ps: 115:12-13,15-18.
2nd: Hebrews 9:11-15.
Gospel:  Mark 14:12-16,22-26.

This is my body; this is my blood
On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said to Jesus, ‘Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the passover?’ So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him, and say to the owner of the house which he enters, “The Master says: Where is my dining room in which I can eat the passover with my disciples?” He will show you a large upper room furnished with couches, all prepared. Make the preparations for us there.’ The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and prepared the Passover.
And as they were eating he took some bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it to them. ‘Take it,’ he said ‘this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had returned thanks he gave it to them, and all drank from it, and he said to them, ‘This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many. I tell you solemnly, I shall not drink any more wine until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God.’

After psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.

This is My Body

He Who prepared that table, Himself also consecrates. For it is not man who turns the offerings into be the Body and Blood of Christ, but Christ Who was crucified for us. The words are spoken by the mouth of the Priest, and consecration by the power and the grace of God. By this word which He spoke, “This is My Body,” the offerings are consecrated; and just as that word which says, “Increase and multiply, and fill the earth,” [Gen 1:28] was sent forth but once, yet has its effect throughout all time, when nature does the work of generation; so also that voice was spoken once, yet gives confirmation to the Sacrifice through all the tables of The Church even to this day, even to His Advent.

Devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is really devotion to the adorable Person of the Saviour in so far as his wounded Heart of flesh represents and recalls His wounded love. So it is also with the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which is often seen pierced by a sword and crowned with flowers, since she stood by the foot of the cross but is now Queen of heaven and earth. However, these devotions do not only consider Jesus’ and Mary’s spirituality without any thought of their physical hearts and much less is it only about devotion to these hearts as organs of a physical body. In fact, both elements are essential for proper devotion, just as soul and body are in the constitution of a man.

Properly speaking, devotion to the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart pays attention and homage to the whole human hearts of Jesus and Mary, as these hearts are not just an expressive symbol, but above all, they are living reminders of their interior life, joys, sorrows, virtues, hidden perfections and purity; both on fire for love of God and of us, their suffering children here below.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.
