12th February 2023

6th Week in Ordinary Time

You have learnt … but now I say to you

Collect Prayer: O God, who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true, grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ …

Readings:
Eccl 15:16-20.
Ps 118.
1 Cor 2:6-10.

Gospel Acclamation: Speak Lord, your servant is listening:

You have the message of eternal life.

Gospel -Matthew 5:17-37

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘I tell you, if your virtue goes no deeper than that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court. ‘You have learnt how it was said: You must not commit adultery. But I say this to you: if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

‘Again, you have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not break your oath, but must fulfil your oaths to the Lord. But I say this to you: do not swear at all. All you need say is “Yes” if you mean yes, “No” if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the evil one.’

Meditation

“Unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees”, that is to say, the righteousness of those who break what themselves teach, as it is elsewhere said of them: “They say, and do not.” Unless your righteousness exceeds in this way: That you do what you teach”, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.
St. Augustine

Readings for Next Sunday (7th in Ordinary Time)

  1. Leviticus 19:1-2,17-18.
  2. Ps 102:1-4,8,10,12-13.
  3. 1 Cor 3:16:23.
  4. Matthew 5:38-48.

We venerate the saints

  • Tue 14 … Ss. Cyril, monk, and Methodius, Bishop.
  • Fri 17 … The Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order.

The Seven Holy Founders

It was on the feast of the Assumption, 1233, that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to seven youths from the city of Florence: Bonfilius, Giovanni, Bartolomeo, Ricovero, Benedetto, Gherardino, and Alessio, who earlier had formed the Confraternity of Praisers of Mary. They were told by the Blessed Virgin to “withdraw from the world” and so went to Monte Senario, eleven miles north of the city. Once there, the Blessed Virgin appeared to them again, instructing them to found the order of her Servants following St. Augustine’s Rule and she conferred on them a black habit. The brothers then elected a superior taking the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, thus the Order of the Servants of Mary was born. It was the 5th mendicant order to be founded. Its main objectives: Sanctification of the members, the preaching of the Gospel and propagation of the devotion to the 7 Sorrows of Our Lady.
